Assess system adequacy with Monte Carlo simulations

The Multi-Area Reliability Simulation (MARS) engine enables electric utility planners to more quickly and accurately assess the ability of a power system, comprised of a number of interconnected areas, to help adequately satisfy customer load requirements. Based on a full sequential Monte Carlo simulation, MARS performs a chronological hourly simulation of the system, comparing the hourly load demand in each area to the total available generation in the area, which has been adjusted to account for planned maintenance and randomly occurring forced outages. This reliability analysis software will analyze the areas with excess capacity and will provide emergency assistance to deficient areas, subject to transfer limits between the areas.

MARS software applications

1
Conduct probabilistic power and reliability assessments of generation capacity adequacy, such as NERC PROB-A, to ensure system reliability and potential risks.
2
More accurately assess the impact of variable renewable generation, additional transmission lines, and energy storage.
3
Perform calculations such as equivalent load carrying capacity to better meet resource adequacy demands.
4
Assess reliability of power supply in meeting energy demand.
5
Determine the need for implementing emergency operating procedures down to hours/year to help avoid system failures.

The UI provides several features including:

  • Easy-to-use, structured file handling for all your cases
  • Special-designed text editor with documentation to make input table handling easier
  • Create and save input and output tables using .csv and .xlsx formats.
  • Intuitive calculation management
  • Professional-quality report creation

The API allows Python users even more power, including:

  • Automated postprocessing calculations and report generation
  • Prepare and run calculations on a local or remote computer.
  • Create inputs from any data source that can be handled in Python.

Planning for uncertainty: the value of stochastics

With the present uncertainty in future policy goals, technology advancements, decarbonization, electrification, and various other factors, planning practices need to evolve. Techniques exist to account for these uncertainties and should be used to develop more robust and adaptable plans which are prepared to handle the unpredictability of the future grid.
